QUE TAL??? | 10.22.18
Hello my dear friends,
1. Tuesday night, 1:15 a.m. hermana Casper and I sleeping soundly, and suddenly our phone rang. I do super annoying things in my sleep sometimes, and naturally I, 3/4 of the way asleep, grabbed the phone, didn't look at who was calling, answered it, and did nothing else. By this point, hermana Casper was awake and cognitively functional enough to look at the name that was calling and start talking. It was our old friend Salvador, who loves us and the church at ton, but mostly because he likes saying 10+ minute long very excessive and eloquent prayers to us over the phone. He was calling us and just goes "hola hermanas puedo decir una oracion, muy rapio..." and hna. Casper was like SALVADOR NO WE WERE ASLEEP IM SORRY THIS IS NOT A GOOD TIME yes ok fine call us later it is 1 am ok bye Salvador. It was so funny because I'm pretty sure I just grabbed the phone, answered it, and went back to sleep.
2. We had dinner in Dallas, and hermana Casper and I were going to take the bus back home to Garland. As we reached the stop, I realized I was a dollar short for the fair. So sad. We were pretty sure that dude let us on the bus anyway, but we are missionaries, so we set up prayer out loud as we're walking so we could find $1 for the bus. About 5 seconds after we said amen, we heard a think. We looked to a parking lot next to us and saw a classic get up of 5 Mexican dudes in a super old white suburban. I was ready to keep walking, but hna Casper just said "I think this is our answer" and confidently walked up to the car full of dudes. She explained our situation in Spanish, and suddenly there were about 12 single dollar bills being forced out the window and our direction. We accepted one of the dollars, shared a card and a short message about Jesus Christ, and walked away grinning. It was way funny, and a chance for me to realize that God is watching out for us as long as we are willing to use our heads and act!!
3. I also chased a 200 lb white dog about 5 blocks and drag get back to it house. I had to ditch my companion for sure of the little guy escaping. Basically we were entering the house of some numbers, and this huge dog slithered past me and started booking it. The abuelo that let us in just looked at the dog and started running super slowly after it, so I realized what I had to be done. It was a good moment for me because I am working on becoming less scared of dogs & our morning runs are finally paying off!!! But daaaang he was so fast. And my companion thought that the abuelito had abducted me because in the spend of 2 seconds he and I had disappeared for like 10 minutes. Finally I returned to the house with the horse dog in tow to my mildly terrified companion and slightly grateful slightly confused family.
4. I handed a Book of Mormon card to this dude in our parking lot a few days ago, and he was super chill. He texted the number we had written on the card, and met him at the ice cream shop across from our apartments. He was literally one of the most amazing people we have ever met. He said he has always wanted to be baptized, said our lesson was touching, and is already planning to read the entire book of Mormon. This doesn't happen and it was so cool because he was so humble and so open to hear the truth we had to share.
an excellent meal:
pan baso from Hermana Serrano. It was probably the best thing I have ever eaten in my life. Basically a bolillo, dunked in red chili sauce, deep fried, then cut in half with chorizo, crema, avocado, potatoes, salsa, and lettuce. She is also probably my favorite cook in the ward her food is SO BOMB. we ate many other delicious things too but I basically have not stopped thinking/ talking about it since we ate it so I'll leave y'all with just that highlight.
I am learning things:
Elder Holland came and spoke to our mission and the Fort Worth mission on Tuesday. It was super killer. There were a few other speakers who I also loved a lot. Basically what I got out of this conference is that this is such a sacred time in my life when I am doing the most important work in the entire world. THIS is the work of the Almighty God- bringing to pass the immortality and eternal life of mankind. All He asks from us is that we put everything thing we have into this work. All I have is 18 months to try and show some form of gratitude for the infinite blessings my Heavenly Father has abundantly poured our upon me. Because of this gospel, I know that I can be with my family forever. I know how I need to lead my life so that I'm happy and have unconditional peace now and in eternity. There are people who don't know this, and they're are people who are hungry for knowledge. We are here to gather Israel, to unite the Lord's people in love.
It was a chance for me to reflect and think about why I'm here. It made me feel very small and the very best way possible. They were probably 400 missionaries in that same room, and it kind of dawned on me- it's entirely not about me. I don't know that I've ever been so happy to not care about myself. After the conference I basically wanted to just run around and tell everyone in sight of this good news. That we have a savior, that we can return to live with our Heavenly Father with their families, and that this message is everyone no matter who they are or what they've done or where they been. I've been working on dedicated myself fully to the Lord's work and to make the best every second of this special time of my life.
a challenge:
read the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30 and think about how you can develop what the Lord has given you!!
Lots of love
